Before you start work, your host employer will explain the exact safe operating procedure, machine instructions and personal protective equipment required at your site. This video supports training. It does not replace practical training, assessment, supervisor sign-off or a training record. English is the authoritative version.

Step 1 · Training/Safety

Training/Safety

Potential Risk
Workers unsure of the process may lead to unwanted events which may result in injury, fatality or damage to equipment

Risk Treatment
At the end of this training which includes the practical component if you are unsure of the process do not proceed contact your Supervisor and the Orchard Manager immediately

If at any time during this process you feel unsafe you are authorised and expected to stop

Contact your Supervisor and the Orchard Manager immediately

Step 2 · Pre-start/safety meeting

Pre-start/safety meeting

Potential Risk
Employees not aware of traffic management requirements may lead to serious collision resulting in injury to operator and damage to equipment

Poor communication when machinery is moved from block to block

Employees with language barriers may not understand traffic management plans

Employees taking short cuts through headlands may lead to collisions resulting in injury to employees and damage to equipment

Risk Treatment
Employees MUST attend morning pre-starts in front of the orchard activity board

Host management MUST communicate daily work plan and safety information which includes but not limited traffic management

Team supervisors MUST reiterate daily work plan and safety matters their teams

If there are language barriers an interpreter MUST be used to communicate information

If traffic management changes throughout the day Host management and supervisors are responsible for communicating changes to employees and updating the orchard activity board

Step 3 · Stop, immobilize and prepare

Stop, switch off and immobilize equipment in designated area.

Collect all required equipment including Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

Potential Risk
Poor housekeeping

Ensure work is not completed in close vicinity to others

Risk Treatment
Ensure all equipment and hoses are arranged in a manner to avoid trip hazards.

Barricade area to prevent access by others where required.

Ensure work is not completed in close vicinity to others.

Step 4 · Inspect and clear the area

Inspect compressor and equipment.

Clear area.

Start compressor motor using steps indicated on machine

Potential Risk
Hose damage

Fittings not connected correctly

Unauthorised personnel in work area.

Machinery Starting up.

Risk Treatment
Visually inspect hose for damages.

Visually inspect all fittings to ensure they are secure and safe for use.

Ensure machinery is shut down and handbrakes applied

Step 5 · Use compressed air for the task

Use compressed air for task required

Potential Risk
Foreign matter in eyes, Dust inhalation, Torn / Damage skin from compressed air pressure, Noise and Damage to equipment

Risk Treatment
Sealed safety glasses, face shield or goggles must be worn.

Wear dust mask or respirator in dusty conditions.

Long sleeves must be rolled down and gloves worn.

Hearing protection must also be worn.

Follow specific instructions to ensure you do not cause potential damage to the machine. E.g. damage to radiators.

Step 6 · Switch off and release remaining air

Switch off the compressor motor if you are the last person in line.

Potential Risk
Hose damage

Damage to motor

Accidental discharge

Risk Treatment
Switch of motor.

Do not hand wand over to anyone without proper PPE while compressor is running.

With compressor turned OFF press the wand to release air left in the hose. Note that all PPE must still be worn for this part.

Step 7 · Roll up hoses and return PPE

Roll up air hose upon completion.

Return PPE

Potential Risk
Trip Hazards

Hose Damage

Risk Treatment
Roll up all air hoses or fully retract all air hose reels.
