Pacific Engagement Visa Job Offers: Does Seasonal Farm Work Qualify?

• Hari Yellina

Applicant and farm employer discuss a written job offer on a shaded veranda

Information checked 15 September 2026. Australian general information; individual circumstances and the current official requirements still need to be checked.

A short casual picking engagement does not meet the ongoing job-offer description published by the Pacific Engagement Visa Employment Support Service. A genuine permanent role or an appropriate fixed-term role may be relevant, but its actual terms need to be checked.

The official applicant guidance describes permanent full-time, permanent part-time and fixed-term offers, giving a 12-month contract as an example. A fixed-term contract must provide the same work entitlements as permanent full-time or part-time employment. Casual contracts are not considered ongoing employment. The example is not a guarantee that every contract labelled “12 months” will qualify.

Three farm situations to compare

These examples are hypothetical. They are ways to prepare the right questions, not assessments of real vacancies.

Proposed job What needs attention
Six weeks of casual picking The work is a short casual engagement. Do not represent it as an ongoing PEV offer merely because another harvest might follow.
A genuine 12-month fixed-term farm role Document the duties, full-time or part-time terms, hours, entitlements and reason the role continues for that period. Ask the official support service to review the offer’s suitability.
Permanent part-time orchard administration An ongoing part-time position is within the types described by the service. Confirm genuine continuing work, agreed hours, pay, duties and location; the applicant must still meet all visa requirements.

Seasonal demand is not the same question as the legal form and substance of a job. An orchard can have peak harvest periods and also need ongoing irrigation, maintenance, packing coordination or administration. Conversely, rewriting a casual arrangement as a permanent offer does not create genuine continuing work.

PEV is not employer sponsorship

The official employer guidance states that PEV is a permanent residence pathway, not an employer-sponsored visa. Selection in the ballot is an invitation to apply. It is not a grant. Existing PALM participation does not guarantee selection or permanent residence.

For an employer, the immediate task is to describe a genuine job accurately and assess the applicant through the normal recruitment process. A letter should not promise a visa outcome, imply the employer controls permanent residence, or impose PALM sponsorship conditions on a PEV holder.

Prepare the offer before asking for it to be checked

  • Employer: correct legal name, work contact and the person authorised to offer the job.
  • Duties: what the person will do on an ordinary working day, the reporting line and any genuine skill or licence requirement.
  • Employment type: permanent full-time, permanent part-time or the precise fixed-term arrangement. Use terms that match how the job will operate.
  • Hours: expected pattern, agreed ordinary hours and how seasonal peaks will be managed.
  • Duration: ongoing employment or the fixed start and end dates, including the genuine work supporting the full period.
  • Pay and entitlements: the applicable award or agreement, classification, remuneration and leave arrangements. Do not hide accommodation or other costs inside an unexplained net-pay promise.
  • Location: actual workplace and any travel between sites, so the applicant can understand transport and living arrangements.
  • Starting conditions: make clear how commencement depends on appropriate work permission and mutually confirmed availability.

Keep questions about visa suitability with the official service or an appropriately qualified adviser. Keep employment-law questions about the proposed contract with the relevant employment specialist. Neither check can be replaced by a promising job title.

A practical next step for employers and applicants

The PEV Employment Support Service can help verify applicant selection and discuss job opportunities. Employers can use its published contact, Employment@pevsupport.com.au. Applicants should use the service’s official channels and retain their own offer and correspondence.

For a broader comparison of workforce arrangements, read Orchard Tech’s PALM and Working Holiday Visa guide. The decision here remains narrower: does this particular written offer describe a genuine ongoing job on appropriate terms?
