Working Alone on a Farm: What Happens When a Check-In Is Missed?

A check-in system is incomplete if a worker sends a message but nobody is assigned to notice when the next one does not arrive. Before lone work begins, decide whether the task is suitable to perform alone and how help will reach the person if something goes wrong.

Link the contact to a location

WorkSafe Victoria recommends reliable emergency communication, agreed procedures and knowing when and where people are working alone. Its guidance includes designated contacts and testing emergency arrangements. The contact person needs a location that is useful on the property, not simply the name of a large farm.

Agree the response before departure

As a practical planning step, write down the worker’s planned area and task, the chosen communication method, the expected contact time and the person monitoring it. Agree the escalation if contact is missed and who takes over if the monitor becomes unavailable. Choose intervals and equipment for the actual risk and coverage; a sample interval in guidance is not a universal safe standard.

Test the weak point

In a hypothetical orchard, a phone works near the office but not in a distant block. Sending a test message from the office does not establish coverage at the task location. Test the planned system where it will be used and reassess the work if reliable contact cannot be maintained. A location app alone should not be assumed to provide a working call connection.

Practise access as well as contact

Check that the response plan identifies usable entry points and access routes. WorkSafe also recommends rehearsing emergency procedures. Review the arrangement when the task, location or worker changes. Some activities need a different work method or another person nearby; a check-in form is not permission to carry out every task alone.
